Mr. Toomey has concentrated his practice in the labor field for 32 years, 30 with Arnold and Kadjan where he has served as counsel to various labor organizations in the public and private sectors. His legal expertise includes labor arbitration, collective bargaining, union election campaigns and other proceedings before the National Labor Relations Board and the U. S. Department of Labor, employment contracts, wage and hour matters, and other employment-related issues. He is a frequent speaker on practical labor relations topics, and conducts seminars on such issues.
Mr. Toomey is a skilled trial and appellate practitioner and served as special counsel to the Will County State’s Attorney. He has argued issues before the Illinois Supreme Court and Federal Circuits across the country and briefed cases before the U. S. Supreme Court.
He has also been named one of the Leading Lawyers in Illinois, based on a statewide survey of lawyers. Leading Lawyers comprise less than 5% of all lawyers in the state.
Mr. Toomey is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh, Second, Eighth and Eleventh Circuits; United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois Trial Bar, the Central District of Illinois, and the U. S. Tax Court.
Mr. Toomey is a member of the Illinois and Chicago Bar Associations.
John is an honors graduate of the University of Illinois, Urbana, a B. S. conferred 1974 and a 1978 graduate of the John Marshall Law School, Juris Doctor, where he was a member of the Waggoner National Labor Moot Court competition and an intern at Region 13 of the National Labor Relations Board.
He is a frequent speaker and lecturer on labor topics including Section 9(a) conversion doctrine; Drug Testing, Discipline and Discharge in the Unionized Workplace; Violence, Discipline and Off Duty Conduct; Construction Industry Workshops, a variety of picketing, handbilling and reserve gate topics and the Family Medical Leave Act.
Mr. Toomey was born in Chicago, Illinois where he resides today.
